In mid 2020, Urban Ecosystems was commissioned to develop a series of landscape spaces to accompany a mixed-used condominium development along historic Lake Street in downtown Wayzata, next to Lake Minnetonka. Currently, the site exists as a large, tired parking area and an overgrown, weathered outdoor seating area. Directly adjacent to the land, a James J. Hill built, 150 year old rail line remains in service. As downtown Wayzata continues to evolve along the lakefront, public spaces and views of the lake are increasingly precious and important for its residents and visitors to enjoy. This design aims to create a series of landscape nodes that intentionally connect to the water not only by viewshed, but by intentional stormwater design, scale and materiality.
