Fond Du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, MnDOT, City of Duluth
Urban Ecosystems was contracted by MnDOT at the request of the Fond Du Lac Band of Ojibwe to conduct a restoration design process for the recently disturbed burial site along highway 23. The project is currently going out for construction bid after a successful community engagement and design process. This project required a native cultural understanding paired with the technical skills of a landscape architect. There are other layers of historic and cultural meaning embedded in this landscape that must be recognized on an equal footing with the modern property law, rights-of-way, and biophysical context. This landscape is imbued with cultural meaning that transcends the legal boundaries of the site.
